Chicago or Chiraq?

II live in Chicago. It's is a city that has New York hustle but Midwest hospitality. The shootings that happens when it's warm outside is the topic most people I know ask me about. I tell them, "it's not crazy like the news says its actually pretty nice depending on where you are". However that doesn't mean much when the news media reports every single shot in the city.

Chicago has now been known throughout America as Chiraq because of the parallel with Iraq the nation that the United States has been at odds with. I don't think it's that bad, I feel each loss of life in the city. It's tragic for anyone involved in these acts of violence. However considering how big Chicago is it could be much worse. That's not what sells though. Fear regarding getting shot in your dome by a thug is what sells.

The majority of violence is carried out by young African American men at war with each other. Due to the stratification methods of politicians, coporations, and community leaders African American men are last hired and first fired. In the day and age of "tough stuff get it together", young brothers are casted as the problem and never part of the solution.

The community as a whole needs to embrace the areas that are deemed violent and understand that it's the lack of opportunity that is the problem. Not the people themselves. -thegqlife
